It’s official, Taking My Parents to Burning Man is now an award winning film. We arrived at the Sonoma International Film Festival ready to premiere our film. What ended up happening we could have never expected. Our world premiere screening was at 9:15am on a Saturday and yet some how we sold out and sadly had to turn people away. Our second screening was in such demand that we had to turn away over 200 people from the screening. So the festival gave us an extra slot in one of their biggest theatres… Which we also sold out.
On that same night we won the the audience award for best feature documentary, we got requested to play two more times in the biggest theatre in Sonoma the following weekend. Guess what? We also managed to sell out that show as well. Sonoma was an amazing start to our festival run, and we got to top it off by going to Pixar for a private screening for the Pixar staff.
So five sold out shows is our record, and the Next festival for us is Newport Beach. Wish us luck!
It’s a huge honour to know that filmmakers you look up to have watched your film. It’s an even bigger honour when they have such nice words to say about that film. Thank you so much to the Soska Twins at tWIStED tWINS PRODUCtIONS who pre-screened Taking My Parents to Burning Man and wrote such a kind review:
“Wow. What a touching surprise of a film. A truly moving, honest piece that bridges the generation gap and brings people together in the real spirit if Burning Man. It’s a real triumph.
I loved it. Great pacing. The family is so relate~able. And it’s just so sweet! I also found it really fascinating and informative as a Burning Man virgin myself. What an incredible experience. And it’s so nice to see a younger generation not only fall into that weird North American culture of being ashamed or separate of their family, but embracing their differences and coming together in a place that’s intended just for that. It’s surprising to see and meet the people who attend this event regularly. It’s really wonderful. Great pacing, charismatic lead, Spry Bry. It’s beautifully shot and cut together. Just an all round beautiful film, literally and emotionally.”
The Soska twins are amazing filmmakers and if you are a horror fan, you must see their work!

Yesterday was a big day for Taking My Parents To Burning Man. In the morning Bry and Li (Bry’s Mom) appeared on the Peak morning show, talking about their experiance. We don’t have a recording to put online of the interview quite yet but that will be on soon.
Later on in the day CBC Music interviewed Bry about the project and turned that interview into a Q&A article that can be viewed HERE.
